GETTING HELP: A LESSON FROM TORAH (OLD TESTAMENT)

A LESSON I’VE HAD TO LEARN MYSELF

Every morning a do a little Torah study and every Saturday I do a lot of it. I’m “observant” but on my own terms. I caught this piece when I was browsing and thought that it might be relevant for the job situation in this country. I also think it teaches the lesson to seek out help and not box yourself in when you think you’re trapped.

Yitro(Exodus 18-20) FROM AISH.COM

Delegate and Soar

Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, came to see Moses after he had heard all of the miracles that God had performed for the Jewish people. Jethro saw that a countless number of Jews were all standing in line to speak to Moses with questions they had. Jethro then told Moses:

“Why do you sit alone with all the people standing by you from morning to evening?… You will surely become worn out … as well as this people that is with you….” (Exodus 18:14-17)

A LIFE LESSON

Jethro couldn’t believe that Moses was the only person who was able to give advice and answers to the Jewish people. Jethro knew that this lack of hierarchy was destined for failure. So he advised Moses how to establish a system whereby the Jews would first go to other knowledgeable people and only seek out Moses for the most complicated and difficult questions and cases.

This method of delegation is in place in virtually every company, army, and government around the world. In fact, it’s vital for any large entity to ever run effectively.

Even though the power of delegation can be just as effective in our own lives, many of us have a difficult time delegating certain important tasks to others. The reason for this is that the moment we ask someone else to do something for us we immediately lose a sense of control. Even though we all have very capable people around us, many of us live with a belief that the best outcome can only occur when we do something ourselves.

But ironically, the exact opposite is true. This is because the only way ever to achieve greatness is to be able to go “outside yourself” and be humble enough to realize that others are extremely capable and many times can actually do a better job then you can. Also, allowing others to assist you in the countless tasks that they’re very capable of doing will immediately increase your self-esteem. This is because it will reign in your egocentric belief that you’re the best one to do everything and demonstrate that you have the ability to trust others to get a job done. And all of this will then free you up to do the things that no one else really can’t do.

Additionally, there are times when we would love to delegate something to someone else but the other person simply lacks the knowledge to do it. So we say to ourselves, “it’s easier if I just do it myself.” Again, this is a debilitating belief. While initially it might take some time to teach others a new set of skills or knowledge, investing a few minutes with them now will enable and empower them to know exactly what to do in the future.

So fight the urge, and delegate important tasks by asking someone to do something that you ordinarily would only do yourself. This will prevent you from “surely becoming worn out” and allow you to focus your energies only on the things that have the potential to make you great.

  1. THE A MAN,
So now I’m not allowed to want anything that’s ever been touched by someone who’s jewish?

That’s great. I don’t feel discriminated or anything at all.

  2. Torah Trah: and the Hebrew Bible:

If thou lend money to any of My people, even to the poor with thee, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest. (Exodus, 22:25)

And if thy brother be waxen poor, and his means fail with thee; then thou shalt uphold him: as a stranger and a settler shall he live with thee. Take thou no interest of him or increase; but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon interest, nor give him thy victuals for increase. (Leviticus, 25:35-37)

Thou shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of any thing that is lent upon interest. Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it. (Deuteronomy, 23:20-21)

    Qur’an Qur’an:

Those who charge usury are in the same position as those controlled by the devil’s influence. This is because they claim that usury is the same as commerce. However, God permits commerce, and prohibits usury. Thus, whoever heeds this commandment from his Lord, and refrains from usury, he may keep his past earnings, and his judgment rests with God. As for those who persist in usury, they incur Hell, wherein they abide forever (Al-Baqarah 2:275)

God condemns usury, and blesses charities.God dislikes every disbeliever, guilty. Lo! those who believe and do good works and establish worship and pay the poor-due, their reward is with their Lord and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve. O you who believe, you shall observe God and refrain from all kinds of usury, if you are believers. If you do not, then expect a war from God and His messenger. But if you repent, you may keep your capitals, without inflicting injustice, or incurring injustice. If the debtor is unable to pay, wait for a better time. If you give up the loan as a charity, it would be better for you, if you only knew. (Al-Baqarah 2:276-280)

O you who believe, you shall not take usury, compounded over and over. Observe God, that you may succeed. (Al-‘Imran 3:130)

And for practicing usury, which was forbidden, and for consuming the people’s money illicitly. We have prepared for the disbelievers among them painful retribution. (Al-Nisa 4:161)

The usury that is practiced to increase some people’s wealth, does not gain anything at God. But if people give to charity, seeking God’s pleasure, these are the ones who receive their reward many fold. (Ar-Rum 30:39)

    Christian New Testament:

Finally the master said to him ‘Why then didn’t you put my money on deposit, so that when I came back, I could have collected it with interest?’
    —Luke 19:23

“Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.”
    —Matthew 25:27

Consider the parable of the talents from the paradigm that Jesus could not and did not change God’s law on usury but instead upheld it. Note first that, in addition to accusing the nobleman (who represented Jesus) of being an austere or hard man, the wicked servant also accused him of taking up what he had not laid down and reaping what he had not sown. In other words, the servant had accused his master of being a thief. On this point, he accuses the master of being a thief, or at least an unscrupulous exploiter. Immediately following these false accusations, the master responded:

“…Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow. Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?”
    —Luke 19:22-23

What religion do all these bankers, lawyers, and judges belong to?

  3. Dying Truth The Constitution was signed by a Jew. So why do you want Constitutional rights?

  4. THE [JEWISH SUPREMACY] MAN,
As you wish Master, just trying to be a good “Ob[edient-]servant [Slave]”. I shall await your orders for the country of my destination, as I am not welcome here in America and am not entiled to any Constitutional Rights.

  8. Torah
    Leviticus – Chapter 25

    44. Your male slave or female slave whom you may have from the nations that are around you, from them you may acquire a male slave or a female slave.

    45. And also from the children of the residents that live among you, from them you may acquire [slaves] and from their family that is with you whom they begot in your land, and they shall become your inheritance.

    46. You shall hold onto them as an inheritance for your children after you, as acquired property, and may thus have them serve you forever. But as for your brethren, the children of I$rael, a man shall not work his brother with rigor.

  9. Delegating is great and great leaders do it well. Its when u ask others to do a job and you know they only know how to locate the line where their name appears- is systematically wrong. That is an example of delegating to those who know nothing and that’s how the banks think. The total and complete opposite of any one elses logic. Go 360 degrees and then you will know how they think. Back to neils point- well taken and we all appreciate all you have done to help so many others. I am thankful for your blog and your site and especially your knowledge. Guess I’m glad you don’t delegate that either. :). God bless you neil. Stay strong and determined – it IS paying off. The last year has changed dramatically because of you and your knowledge and for your ability to help those who really need it. Thanks again and just allways be careful who you delegate too– florida is a difficult state to delegate any thing to anyone. Ie- let’s use 90 year old judges because we are in a huge hurry to steal all the homes. A 90 year old person is going to have a real hard time understanding foreclosure fraud let alone enduring the hard seat- bed sores could develop if they are not careful. Deb

  10. Thank you all for sharing …..

  11. “Even though the power of delegation can be just as effective in our own lives, many of us have a difficult time delegating certain important tasks to others. The reason for this is that the moment we ask someone else to do something for us we immediately lose a sense of control.”

I disagree. Many of us bought under full faith that things were in accordance of the law and we believed. Now every time we trust others to do there job. They are not. They are finding excuses to look the other way or finding profit.

“This is because the only way ever to achieve greatness is to be able to go “outside yourself” and be humble enough to realize that others are extremely capable and many times can actually do a better job then you can.”

Hello, have you tried to make a phone call to government agencies to assist you in mortgage fraud. Worn out is all we got left. If we lose, then it’s on behalf of future generations is what were fighting for.

Be it ever so humble, there is no place like home.

YA, WELL, YOU TOOK THAT TOO.

  12. By the way Jethro was a Midiyan High Priest. A non Jew.

  13. Neil Garfield is a “Tzadik” a “Righteous Man”. May “Hashem” Give you Strength and Courage.

And to the rest of us also May G-d Give all of us Strength and Courage.

  14. Also think the message is about sharing. Sharing yourself. Gwen is right about what this blog has given us.

I am not Jewish — but have shared in holy days and holidays for a very long time. Learned much from also, on occasions, going to Temple (once was given a great honor).

Delegating and sharing — will get things done.

  15. I am worn out lol. How true. My belief came from being let down too many times by individuals that said they would do a certain job and did nothing …. However once in a while someone, at least I hope… Comes thru amen

  16. Sounds like you are preaching to yourself Neil. You have done so much to help us homeowners to understand what has been done. Your work has been a great help in my understanding. Thank you. Oh, did you read up on what the Torah has to say about how you should eat and subsequent promises of health if you do so?

  17. Amen! I really think Neil this is what this blog has to offer more than anything–it gives us the opportunity to reach out and ASK for help from those who know what is going on in “our lives” because they are going thru it in “their lives”. I really had not practice law for some time and this “blogging” and emailing with other solos and pro se’s has been a wonderful experience–its a sharing of thoughts and thought processes and yes “going outside of self”. Thank you for this thought. God speed (from the new testament!)

  18. I used to be guilty of such actions, never trusting anyone to do what I always thought only I could achieve to perfection, boy was I wrong!! over the years I’ve learned how much more effective I can be by letting others do “too important” stuff that needed to be done, it is indeed a blessing learning how to trust others to do things for you, it empowers you to be bigger and better at what you do.
