Elizabeth Warren is the One to Appoint

Here are some things we can all agree on regardless of our position on the appointment. Let’s look at the attributes of this candidate for the job of heading the Bureau of Consumer  Financial Protection:

  • SMART (HARVARD)
  • CREDIBLE
  • WELL-INFORMED
  • EXPERIENCED
  • DEVOTED TO HER DUTIES (CONGRESSIONAL OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN)
  • STUDIOUS
  • THOUGHTFUL
  • CAPITALIST IDEOLOGY (BLAMES PEOPLE NOT THE SYSTEM)
  • PATRIOTIC (CONCERN FOR NATION AND CITIZENS)
  • PASSION FOR THE JOB

There are other attributes as well that even the most conservative people would agree with. So why is there opposition? ANSWER: Ideology.

Because there are people who fear big government there are politicians willing to pander to those people as though THAT was the issue. It isn’t. The legislation has passed. The law exists. The Bureau has been created.

The question is not whether we should have a government solution. The question is who should be the the leader of the institution created by congress to handle the consumer side of the financial system.

Why wouldn’t you want a person with the attributes listed above to be the one to be in charge of the Bureau? What is in it for you to see someone with fewer attributes or less conviction about their job in protecting consumers from convoluted schemes emanating from Wall Street? Do you really think that the country would be better off if the appointment goes to someone who is less suited for the job?

The controversy here is not between reasonable people. It is between established people on Wall Street and the rest of the nation.

  1. Connecticut has become tired of its two senators.

  2. SOMEONE NEEDS TO GET THE EAR OF THE HONORABLE SENATOR DODD (D-Conn) He has some doubts about Warren’s confirmablility?

As far as the Democratic base is concerned, the best choice to head up the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is Elizabeth Warren. And the Obama administration agrees that Warren is well-qualified to head up the agency essentially inspired by her. But confirming E-Dubs, that’s another story! That would take political will or large Congressional majorities or something. And so there’s a lingering doubt whether Warren is “confirmable.”

Robert Gibbs is among those who think Warren’s confirmation is doable. However, Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) disagrees, telling TPM’s Brian Beutler, “I don’t know, that’s the question, how does he know that?”

Ahh, but what about using one of those recess appointment thingies? As our own Sam Stein reported today, the White House is “hint[ing] strongly” that some recess appointments are in the offing for the upcoming August recess. Dodd tells Beutler that this would be a really bad idea:

“I think that would be a huge mistake,” Dodd said, in response to a question from TPMDC. “Recess appointments. No, no, no.”

“I think those are, you know, Republicans used to do it, I think that’s a mistake,” Dodd added. “Except in the most extreme circumstances where you need someone because of an emergency pending, but as a routine matter, I think it’s a fundamental mistake.”

Oh! Well, you never know, maybe some “extreme circumstances” or a “pending emergency,” like a massive unemployment crisis or a huge financial collapse will crop up one of these days!

  3. I really think that using the term “banksters” serves to trivialize the bankers’ part in this horror show. It seems more like an attempt at tongue-in-cheek humor along the lines of calling someone “naughty” when they have committed an act which is anything but. Any other ideas out there?

  4. Someone needs to go to jail. But this government could care less because they created the mess. But yet the honest home owners must pay for the crime committed by others. The fleecing continues by Phil Graham, Bill Clinton, G.W. Bush and Greenspam. Pension funds were stolen, 401 ks dismantled and savings dissolved. My only hope is that I die before I retire. Thirty years of hard work and education got me know where in this life. God dam dirty bunch of bastards. Hopefully they will all burn in hell. McCain can shove his fence up his A$$. Not to mention Nobama is deaf , dumb and blind and can not see past the banksters who put him in office.

Call Obama’s H.O.P.E. program. They will suggest that you cut back on the food budget.
Call Obama’s H.A.M.P. program, you will find you are .1% from qualification.
Call Consumer Credit Counseling (Division of H.U.D.) They will refer you to websites with free legal advice

I am mad as hell and will stay this way until I drop dead.

This stops now. We need Elizabeth Warren

  5. Hope I don’t get CENSORED for this. But there is a political “action” campaign in progress to counter Tim Geithner’s opposition to the Warren Nomination. I received a solicitation to contribute and PASS the WORD.

    White House Defends Elizabeth Warren

    Bloomberg News

    Elizabeth Warren
The White House is standing behind bankruptcy expert Elizabeth Warren as it continues its search for the leader of its new consumer financial protection bureau, born of the financial regulatory overhaul legislation signed into law last week.

“Elizabeth Warren is a terrific candidate. I don’t think any criticism in any way by anybody would disqualify her and I think she’s very confirmable for this job,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said at a news briefing Monday, according to Reuters.

Warren, a Harvard Law School professor most recently tasked with overseeing a congressional panel on the 2008 bank bailout program, HAS FREQUENTLY ELICITED THE IRE OF WALL STREET AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY WITH HER PRO-CONSUMER VIEWS AND ARDENT CRITICISM OF BIG BANKS. But despite her lack of mass appeal, Gibbs stressed that the White House believes she’s “very confirmable” for the top post at the new group.

The consumer financial protection bureau envisioned in the legislation President Obama signed into law last week is Warren’s brainchild, originally conceived in a 2007 article in the journal Democracy, according to the New York Times. In that piece, Warren advocated for a body she called a “financial product safety commission” and criticized the government for offering consumers more protection from faulty toasters than from questionable mortgage lending practices.

But while the inventor of the bureau herself is surely considered a favorite for the opening, she’s far from the only option Obama is considering.

“We’ve got many good candidates,” Gibbs said. “I KNOW THAT THE PRESIDENT WILL LOOK AT THIS JOB AND THE SEVERAL OTHER JOBS THAT ARE CREATED AS PART OF THIS LEGISLATION AND MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT.”
